Civility

Civil discourse is important to the health of the nation.  Here is a pledge we can take.

Some Ideas on How to Improve

Our Discourse

  1. All Americans have a fundamental right to civil discourse, even if the ideas make other uncomfortable.

  2. If a person disagrees with you, the person doesn’t have an ill motive and still wants a better nation for children and grandchildren.

  3. Violence and property destruction should never be condoned as a means of expression or a means of repressing speech.

  4. Don’t double down on a statement that is provably false for the sake of politics.

  5. Don’t use hyperbole simply to anger others.  Use it to make a point clearer.

  6. Don’t take offense at every phrase or literary device that can create a victim.  Recognize common phrases are not calls for violence and are usually benign.

  7. Don’t accuse every person who disagrees with you of “hate.,” but take on incorrect ideas directly with evidence, humor and kindness.

  8. Don’t accept the fundamental assumptions underlying opposing idea.

  9. Use satire and humor to make a point, but don’t personally attack the inherent humanity of others.

  10. Learn to take a joke when satire and humor is directed at you.
